Medical Center Surgical Weight Loss Program Achieves Center of Excellence Accreditation in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

Medical Center Surgical Weight Loss Program has achieved accreditation as a Center of Excellence in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery by Surgical Review Corporation (SRC).

This accreditation distinguishes Med Center Health from many other health systems by providing the highest quality of care to patients as determined by an independent, external process of evaluation. The facility takes a multidisciplinary approach to patient care ensuring that from the first visit to their post-operative follow ups, patients are receiving the best possible care.

In addition to receiving Surgeon of Excellence honors, Dr. Onyeoziri Nwanguma, MD, FACS has been awarded the Master Surgeon in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation, SRC’s highest individual distinction. “The most important thing to note,” said Dr. Nwanguma, “is that the Center of Excellence award in bariatric surgery is not a surgeon’s award. It is an institutional award. While we have proven that we have high surgical volume with minimal complications, the hospital has demonstrated its dedication to the care of the bariatric patient.”

Status as an accredited Center of Excellence means that Med Center Health has met nationally recognized standards. Not all hospitals and surgeons seek accreditation; not all that undergo the rigorous on-site inspection process are granted accreditation.

“We are proud of the Surgical Weight Loss Program and its impact on helping people live healthier lives,” said Wade Stone, Executive Vice President of Med Center Health. “Since the program’s inception in 2012, we have seen first-hand the life-changing power bariatric surgery has for patients. We also congratulate Dr. Nwanguma on being awarded the Master Surgeon distinction, an extraordinary achievement and very well-deserved.”

Healthcare organizations and surgeons seeking accreditation by SRC undergo an extensive self-assessment and on-site inspection. This process includes physicians, nurses and administrators who are actively involved in the accredited program. The inspection is consultative and educational, presenting best practices to help an organization or surgeon improve its care and services.

“We’re proud to recognize Medical Center Surgical Weight Loss Program as a Center of Excellence in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery for their commitment to advancing and providing quality care for all patients,” said Gary M. Pratt, CEO of SRC. “This accreditation signals that the facility and its surgeons are among the best in the specialty and are dedicated to delivering the highest level of care possible.”
