We Take Great Care Diagnosing and Treating Mental Illness

Medical Center Psychiatry specializes in diagnosing and treating mental health issues in adults. Our board-certified physicians and nurse practitioners can investigate and help patients understand the basis of troubling feelings or problems and help find solutions.

Board-certified physicians and nurse practitioners at Medical Center Psychiatry specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental health problems in adults. We help patients understand the basis of troubling problems or feelings and find solutions.

Our treatment programs are designed to help patients change behaviors or thought patterns, explore the effect of past relationships and experiences on present behaviors, treat troubled relationships, or solve other problems.

The specialists at Medical Center Psychiatry can determine if there is a need for medication to help restore imbalances in body chemistry. These chemical imbalances often play a major role in mental health problems. Should an adult patient best be treated through hospitalization, the physicians at Medical Center Psychiatry can work with The Medical Center Behavioral Health Services to develop an effective treatment program to meet the patient’s individual needs.

Patient Health Questionnaire

The Patient Health Questionnaire assists in screening, diagnosing, and measuring your severity of depression. When you submit the questionnaire, we will evaluate your responses and contact you for an appointment if depression is indicated.

Hope for patients with treatment-resistant depression

Medical Center Psychiatry offers two treatment options for patients with treatment-resistant depression: Spravato®, a once- or twice-a-week nasal spray; and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, a noninvasive, non-drug treatment with proven results. Medical Center Psychiatry is the only certified Spravato treatment center and certified TMS treatment center in Southcentral Kentucky.

Spravato®

Spravato is a nasal spray used in combination with an oral antidepressant to treat adults with treatment-resistant depression. It is also used to treat symptoms of depression in adults with MDD who have suicidal thoughts or actions. Spravato is only available at certified treatment centers, such as Medical Center Psychiatry in Bowling Green. Because this treatment can cause a temporary sleepiness, dizziness or a feeling of being briefly disconnected from yourself, it is administered in the safe environment of a doctor’s office. Patients are monitored for around two hours after receiving Spravato. In clinical studies, Spravato showed a greater reduction of depressive symptoms at four weeks than among those patients who received a placebo. Medical Center Psychiatry is the only certified Spravato treatment center in Southcentral Kentucky.

Neurostar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Because depression starts in the brain, Neurostar TMS uses magnetic pulses, similar to an MRI, to target specific areas of the brain that regulate mood. The magnetic pulses “reignite” connections in the brain that are inactive and causing symptoms of depression. TMS is a safe, noninvasive outpatient procedure that takes just a few minutes for the treatment itself. TMS is not the same as electroconvulsive (shock) therapy. Unlike shock therapy, patients are awake during the procedure and there are few if any long-term side effects. More than 80% of people who have undergone TMS treatment have reported improvement in their symptoms, and around 60% have recovered from depression entirely. Medical Center Psychiatry is the only certified TMS treatment center in Southcentral Kentucky.
