About John Downing, M.D., FACS

A retired Captain of the United States Navy Medical Corps and Naval Reserve, Dr. John Downing has practiced in Bowling Green for 40 years.  His primary areas of practice are cataract and intraocular lens implant surgery and comprehensive ophthalmology.

Dr. Downing provides advanced eye care for patients with a wide range of eye conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, retinal disease and macular degeneration. He and the team at Med Center Health Eye Care work with patients to help preserve or improve their vison.

Dr. Downing currently serves as Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Over the course of his career, he has completed over 30 medical mission trips in 20 countries around the world, mostly teaching local ophthalmologists new eye surgery techniques.

“Improvement and maintenance of vision is very important in how we function and enjoy life. I do my best to help everyone see and maintain their vision.”  Dr. Downing’s approach to patient care is to treat everyone equally and with respect, as if they are members of his own family.

In his free time, Dr. Downing enjoys photography and reading, mostly non-fiction, history and politics.
