The Medical Center at Bowling Green and The Medical Center at Albany named SANE Ready Hospitals

The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services has certified The Medical Center at Bowling Green and The Medical Center at Albany as Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)-ready hospitals. The two hospitals now maintain a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner on call at every moment. The Medical Center at Bowling Green has more than tripled its credentialed SANE nurses in the past two years, giving the hospital the capacity to provide 24/7 SANE coverage in its Emergency Department.

“This means that no matter when a patient presents after a sexual assault, our nurses are available to provide quality, compassionate, trauma-informed and patient-centered care to the residents of Southcentral Kentucky,” said Melissa Gilpin, MSN, RN, SANE AA, SANE PA Clinical Educator with The Medical Center Emergency Department and SANE Program Administrator.

The Medical Center at Bowling Green is the only hospital in the 10-county Barren River Area Development District (BRADD) to receive this certification and is one of only 19 hospitals across the state. The Medical Center at Albany is also the only SANE Ready hospital in the Lake Cumberland Area Development District (LCADD). Med Center Health now has 15 SANE nurses company wide, including 11 SANE nurses at The Medical Center at Bowling Green, 2 at The Medical Center at Albany, 1 at The Medical Center at Caverna, and 1 at The Medical Center at Russellville. There are also three more Med Center Health nurses (one at The Medical Center at Bowling Green and two at the Medical Center at Albany) who are working to complete their training to become SANE nurses by the end of the year.

“I am extraordinarily proud of the commitment of these incredible nurses to go above and beyond to provide this care in the darkest hours of someone’s life, and I am grateful to Med Center Health’s dedication to serve the needs of every member of our community and the surrounding communities who come to us for quality, comprehensive and compassionate care,” said Gilpin.
