Volunteer Opportunities

Note: Each of these opportunities are available from 8:00-12:00 & 12:00-4:00 Monday through Friday. Most of our volunteers will offer a half day per week or more if their time allows.

Ambulatory Surgery

The volunteer will assist staff in tasks that include: Providing snacks and beverages to patients following surgery (when approved by nursing staff); providing warm blankets to patients; cleaning stretchers; running errands for staff; and other activities as requested by staff.

Ambulatory Surgery Registration

The volunteer is responsible in assisting the Registration Clerk with answering phone calls and other desk activities. They will escort families to visit with surgery patients prior to and following surgery. They will escort families to conference room to meet with surgeons. They will escort patients to other areas of hospital as needed.

Chaplaincy

The Volunteer Chaplain will assist the Hospital Chaplain when needed. They will provide comfort and prayer to patients, particularly in the Emergency Department, upon the request of the patient or patient support person. They will provide comfort and prayer to staff members when requested.

Community Wellness

The volunteer may assist the Community Wellness team with events such as: The Women’s Conference and The Health and Wellness Expo. Duties may include preparing mailings for the events, phone call follow ups, and set up/breakdown for the events.

Diagnostic Registration

The volunteer will assist Registration staff with clerical activities and escorting patients to the different diagnostic areas for testing services.

Emergency Department Patient Liaison

The primary task for this volunteer will be to round on ED patients who are in the lobby and in the back waiting to be seen by the provider. The purpose will be to provide contact by an additional hospital representative. They will offer warm blankets. They will assist staff in activities such as stocking supplies and the blanket warmer. They will do errands for staff as necessary.

Front Desk

The volunteer will assist the staff by answering phone calls and directing visitors to patient rooms or other locations. They will cover the desk during the staff
member’s lunch and breaks. Volunteers may also: deliver mail to patients, distribute magazines to waiting areas, fill brochure racks through the hospital.

Human Resources

On a monthly basis, the volunteer will assist HR staff with labeling the next month’s birthday cards for staff throughout the corporation.

Nursery

The volunteer will assist the staff by holding/rocking babies, changing diapers, and feeding them. They will help organize and stock supplies. All Volunteer Opportunities in Nursery are currently occupied!

Outpatient Registration

The volunteer will assist the staff by calling patients’ families to the check-in desk and escorting them to see patients before and after procedures. One of the primary responsibilities will be to round on patients who are in the lobby and in the back waiting to be seen by the provider. The purpose will be to provide contact by an additional hospital representative. They will offer warm blankets if requested. They will also escort family members to conference with physicians following a procedure. They will assist staff with answering phones.

Pre-Admission Testing

The volunteer will assist staff with preparing information folders and other clerical activities. They will escort patients to x-ray and other areas for testing.

Wayfinding

The volunteer assists at the Main Entrance Front Desk at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. Volunteer will help patients, visitors, and guests navigate throughout the hospital.

Additional Occasional or Once-a-Year Activities:

  • Decorate and then ‘Un-decorate’ the Hospital for the Christmas Season.
  • Help prepare and decorate Auditorium for the Volunteer Christmas and Appreciation Luncheons.
  • Assist at Baby Fair.
  • Register staff/others during Blood Drives.
  • Cover front desk at Employee Health for their monthly staff meetings.
