Purpose

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e. BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Resident Qualifications

  • Graduate of an ACPE-accredited College or School of Pharmacy
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of Kentucky

  • Official transcripts of all professional pharmacy education
  • Three (3) references completed in PhorCAS by healthcare professionals who can attest to the applicant’s practice abilities and aptitudes

Learning Experiences

Required rotations will be completed prior to elective rotations unless special circumstances exist. Each circumstance will be evaluated by the RPD and must be approved by the RAC. Required longitudinal rotations are scheduled for 2-12 months of the year. The resident will choose three elective learning experiences.

  • Teaching Certificate (12 months)

Teaching & Research

Residents will complete ASHP’s Teaching Certificate for Pharmacists which was developed in partnership with the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. This program is designed to introduce the residents to academic literature, contemporary pharmacy education, teaching styles, and philosophies.

Our residents will have the opportunity to mentor pharmacy students from the University of Kentucky and Sullivan University colleges of pharmacy. Residents will assist in teaching classes and provide educational programs for medical students, residents, and fellows as well as pharmacy students, nursing students and graduate nurses.

Residents are required to complete a research project that is suitable for publication and will be presented at a local, state, and regional meeting.
