Learning more about summer superfoods

With the summer season upon us, backyard gatherings with family and friends are always a great time, and food always makes these gatherings even better. Now is a great time to learn about fruits and veggies that are considered SUPERFOODS that you can serve to your guests. BONUS: You’ll help your health, too!

In this article, we will review 5 fruits and veggies that are considered superfoods. This is Part 1 of the list of superfoods, so be on the lookout for next month’s Wellness publication where we will dive into 5 additional summer superfoods.

  1. Berries

They’re tiny, but mighty. Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are are packed full of fiber. Berries also have a plentiful supply of Vitamin C and lots of antioxidants. These are substances that protect your cells from damage. And they taste great, too!

  • Peppers

Peppers are among the most versatile summer vegetables. They range from sweet to hot and come in red, green, orange, and yellow varieties. Each pepper color has different phytonutrients or plant chemicals that can help prevent disease.

  • Leafy greens

Lettuces, which vary from pale white to deep green, are packed with nutrition. Iceberg lettuce can be hydrating and refreshing. Kale and collard greens are loaded with Vitamin K, so they help the body recover from injuries.

  • Figs

In late summer, these sweet and floral fruits are a great treat. Figs contain a good source of calcium, potassium, and magnesium. These minerals help the body have strong bones. Figs also have probiotics that can promote good gut health.

  • Watermelon

These fruits are considered the fruit of summer. Nothing is better than biting into a chilled wedge of watermelon! This juicy melon is more than 90% water, making it a great fruit for hydration on a hot summer day. Watermelons are also very low in calories, but are very filling.
