Suman Shekar, M.D., recognized as Fellow of American College of Physicians

On Thursday, April 28, Suman Shekar, M.D., was recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) at the American Academy of Physicians Conference in Chicago. During this year’s ACP ceremony, Dr. Shekar and other internists took a pledge reaffirming their dedication to internal medicine. Dr. Shekar also attended the annual scientific meeting to stay current with medical practices.

Fellows are elected upon the recommendation of their peers and the review of ACP’s Credentials Committee. Among the recommendations from Dr. Shekar’s peers was a recommendation letter written by the late Rebecca D. Shadowen, M.D.

“Being an FACP is a distinction earned from colleagues who recognize your accomplishments and achievements over and above the practice of medicine,” said Dr. Shekar. “It encourages me to do better, be more involved in teaching and not forget the initial reason I came into medicine — patient care. We took the pledge last night and it was a humbling experience.”

ACP is the largest medical specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States. ACP members include 143,000 internal medicine physicians (internists), related subspecialists, and medical students. Internal medicine physicians are specialists who apply scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to the diagnosis, treatment, and compassionate care of adults across the spectrum from health to complex illness.
