Ticket to Ride (TTR): Safe Travels for Every Patient
When patients move between departments for tests or procedures, clear communication is critical. The Ticket to Ride process ensures safe, consistent handoffs and helps prevent errors and adverse events during transport.
Your Role in Ticket to Ride
- The transporting employee obtains a Ticket to Ride from Expanse (printed within the last 4 hours).
- Before transport, review the TTR at the bedside and confirm the following safety checks in the presence of the patient:
- Patient and designation verified
- Responder 5 “Pt out of room”
- CMU notified
- O2 Tank >1000 psi and O2 rate confirmed
- Consent with patient
- MRI checklist if applicable
- RT/RN present if required
Even if the nurse is transporting the patient, the ticket MUST be completed and signed!
- TTR stays with the patient at all times
- At the destination, review and sign the form at the bedside, noting any condition changes.
- Before returning to the floor, reverify the patient, oxygen rate and oxygen tank level, and return destination.
- Upon return, ensure any changes in oxygen, telemetry, or procedural updates are documented.
Final in room safety checks include:
- Bed left in low position
- Responder 5 “Pt in Room”
- Bed/chair alarms activated
- CMU notified
- O2 Connected and rate confirmed
