KHA Patient Safety Hero Award – Millie Caffey

Congratulations to Millie Caffey, an RN and Clinical Outcome Specialist at The Medical Center at Bowling Green, for receiving the KHA Patient Safety Hero Award. This award is given to individuals that uncover new methods of quality improvement and patient safety, train staff member(s) on the importance of patient safety, and/or prevent harm from a patient at risk. The following is Millie’s award nomination.

Millie is dedicated to helping our staff provide safe, quality care. Leaders, providers, and staff find her to be approachable and have trust in the work she does. She advocates for the patients, as well as the bedside nurse. As the leader of our CAUTI workgroup, she has been instrumental in the progress that has been made with our reduction of CAUTIs. From 2021 to 2023, we have seen an overall 35% decrease in catheter usage and a 42% reduction in CAUTI. In 2024, we are on target to see further improvement. She has helped champion a “Ticket to Ride” process to help standardize the transporting and handoff process of patients throughout the hospital. Millie works with her fellow nurses to help understand barriers, as well as be a resource and educate when needed. She is constantly seeking to understand and provide feedback. She is an asset to our hospital and our community. If I had a loved one in the hospital, I would want Millie as part of the care team.” – Ashley Hittson
