Help with diabetes available for employees and community
November is National Diabetes Month, and Med Center Health offers an exceptional Diabetes Education Program for Med Center Health employees and to all we serve.
The Medical Center Diabetes Education Program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association and offers the area’s highest quality diabetes education.
If you, or someone you know, have diabetes, the Diabetes Education Program can help you find the right balance that allows a person to live a healthy life and prevents the complications that can occur with diabetes.
Tammy Davis, RN and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist at Med Center Health, spoke about how challenging and confusing a diabetes diagnosis can be.
“When a person is diagnosed with diabetes,” Davis said, “they typically have many questions like ‘Where do I even begin, what can I eat, or how do I check my blood sugar and what do those numbers actually even mean?’ They need help, they need support and they need answers. That’s what the Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support program is designed to do. As a certified diabetes care and education specialist, my goal for that person is they receive a coach, teacher and cheerleader, all in one.”
Medical experts with the program can assist you in a variety of ways:
- Meal planning
- Blood sugar monitoring
- Exercise
- Foot & skin care
- Insulin instruction and diabetes medications
- Gestational diabetes education
- Prevention of complications
- Coping/stress management
- Personalized goal setting
Diabetes Self-Management Education and support is available and a covered benefit for our Med Center Health employees. The Diabetes Education Program is a physician-referred program that is filed with insurance. To find out more information, please call (270) 745-0942.
