Med Center Health welcomes Roshni Venugopal, M.D.

Med Center Health is pleased to welcome Roshni Venugopal, M.D. as she joins O. Raphael Nwanguma, M.D., FACS at Medical Center Surgical Weight Loss Program. As a bariatric surgeon, Dr. Venugopal helps patients restore their health with weight loss surgery.

Dr. Venugopal comes to Kentucky from Cleveland, Ohio. There, she launched a reflux and dysmotility center to facilitate the evaluation and management of reflux, heartburn, and swallowing disorders that occur in the bariatric population.

“Many of my patients feel uncomfortable with their weight and realize they are not healthy. I meet them after they have been frustrated with multiple failed diets,” said Dr. Venugopal. “They may not realize, however, that their weight is creating diabetes, straining their heart, injuring their liver, and putting them at increased risk of developing cancer. With bariatric surgery, we can eliminate Type II diabetes, reverse high blood pressure and halt fatty liver disease. Weight loss surgery is a very powerful tool with which we can reverse chronic disease and win back quality years of life.” 

Dr. Venugopal earned her medical degree at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. She completed residency training in General Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City and the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. She completed a Surgical Critical Care fellowship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, practicing initially as an academic trauma surgeon.

“My experience with nutrition in ICU patients sparked my interest in metabolic disease, which led me to pursue a bariatric fellowship and refocus my practice,” she said. Dr. Venugopal completed a fellowship in Advanced GI Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

Dr. Venugopal is excited to join The Medical Center, which over the last several years has become a teaching hospital through partnerships with University of Kentucky College of Medicine-Bowling Green Campus and Western Kentucky University. “I am thrilled for the opportunity to teach students and residents at The Medical Center,” said Dr. Venugopal, “and I am looking forward to joining the excellent providers at Medical Center Health.”
