About Christa Atkins, LSW, MBA

“I believe that when caring for patients we need to always remember they are individuals, just as we are.  They are not defined by their illness.  We should always treat them the way we would want to be treated.  We should also remember that we are meeting them during a very hard time in their lives.  We must strive to give them the love and care they need to help them overcome and return to their lives.” – Christa Atkins, MBA, LSW

Christa Atkins earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work from Western Kentucky University in 1995. She then began her career as an Activities Director for a local skilled nursing facility in Bowling Green, Ky. Christa credits that role as being the foundation of her career and love of healthcare. Prior to joining the Med Center Health team in 2001 as a Social Worker for The Medical Center at Bowling Green, she held various roles at local skilled nursing facilities including Activities Director, Social Services Director, and Admissions Director. She also served as Manager of an Assisted Living Facility in Franklin, Ky.

In her role as Social Worker at The Medical Center at Bowling Green, she covered the discharge planning needs for patients of various units of the hospital including both ICU, CCU, Open Heart Recovery, Cardiac, Oncology, Nephrology, and Pediatrics as well as covering needs of the Emergency Department and Radiation Oncology. In her role as social worker, she met with patient and families and connected them to the individual resources they needed after discharge from the hospital.

In 2006, Christa transferred within Med Center Health to Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital as the Social Worker, continuing her work in discharge planning. At Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital, she learned the importance of Long-term Acute Care Hospitals and the special care patients receive there. In 2015, Christa became the Administrator at Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital where she strives to stay up to date on regulations of Long-Term Acute Care Hospitals and ensures that patients at Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital receive the best care possible. Christa decided to continue her education by earning her Master of Business Administration from Lindsey Wilson College in 2020.

Outside of her work in healthcare, Christa loves spending time with her family. She enjoys after Church Sunday lunches with her family where she gets to hear the adventures of her twin nieces. Christa and her husband love spending time with their three dogs and a cat that they adopted from the local animal shelter. Christa loves all things art and enjoys painting/drawing, singing, and playing piano, as well as listening to music.
